Dermal Fillers, What are the risks?

Posted on 26 June 2020

Dermal fillers are mainly used to replace lost volume to facial areas, improve skin texture and soften lines and for subtle enhancement of lips.

Like all medical treatments dermal filler procedures carry risks, ranging from temporary side effects including bruising, swelling and discomfort, to rare but serious complications such as vascular occlusion, blindness, and stroke.

At Euphoria we take all potential complications seriously, particularly the risk of vascular occlusion, blindness and stroke as these complications can cause catastrophic life changing impairment. No injector or patient is immune to complications and therefore even with the best safety protocols in place, the risk cannot be removed entirely. As with any procedure it is important that you are fully informed regarding possible risks, side effects and complications.

At Euphoria it is a requirement that you attend a consultation appointment prior to booking for a dermal filler procedure.

During your consultation with our Registered Nurse an assessment of the areas you are considering treating will be performed to ensure your suitability for dermal fillers. You will be informed regarding the procedure, expected outcomes, and cost for your treatment.

Rachel will discuss with you your current health & medical history as well as any previous cosmetic treatments you have had.

You will also be informed regarding the following dermal filler side effects, risks, and potential complications.

Common temporary side effects:
  • Bruising
  • Swelling
  • Discomfort
  • Redness
Less common side effects:
  • Infection
  • Inflammatory reactions
  • Lumps
Rare but serious potential complications:
  • Allergic reaction
  • Anaphylaxis
  • Nerve injury
  • Vascular Occlusion (filler inadvertently blocking a blood vessel)
  • Blindness & or Stroke (filler inadvertently blocking a blood vessel supplying the eye or brain)
